Renzo Galanello

We express our condolences for the loss of Professor Renzo Galanello. From the Clinical Department he directed at University of Cagliari - Ospedale Regionale per le Microcitemie (Cagliari, Italy), he became a reference for all of us in general paediatrics and paediatric haematology. His interest and effort to fight Rare Anaemias is an inspiration for all the ENERCA members.

We wish to thank Prof. Galanello for his passion and dedication to the development of new drug therapies and the understandig of the genetics of thalassemia. He devoted his life to this fight, until he prematurely died at the age of 65 due to an illness. He had a dream: "I want to defeat thalassemia." With his research in molecular genetics he was able to take the road of hope: "We find the lock," he repeated, "then we can look for the key to winning the disease."

Dr. Galanello is the author of at least 170 publications on thalassemia, disorders of metabolism, and hereditary blood disorders. His dead means a great loss for his colleagues and patients in Sardinia, but also leaves a gap between those who have estimated and valued him around the world. He was an outstanding ENERCA partner and we will miss him.
