This tutorial focuses on pathogenesis, diagnosis and new approaches to treatment for clinical hematologists in the field of anemia of chronic disesases and myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative disorders.

Learning Objectives Anemia of Chronic Disease: After participating in this Tutorial, participants should be able to:

-To review new insights in pathogenesis of ACD including changes in iron metabolism nad regulatory function of hepcidin.
-To review a list of appropriate laboratory investigations with special regard to diagnosis of iron deficiency in cases with combination of different pathogenetic mechanisms (eg. inflammatory bowell disease).
-To review new theraeutic options for patients with ACD (role of iron nad EPO administration, new drugs eg. minihepcidins, hepcidin antagonists).


Learning Objectives Mixed Myelodusplastic Syndromes: After participating in this Tutorial, participants should be able to:

-To review diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis of MDS/MPS with special regard to MDS with fibrosis.
-To review therapeutic options for patients with mixed MDS/MPS.
-To review the outcome of patients with rare congenital anemias and cytopenias who may subsequently develop MDS as adolescents or adult patients.
