AF is a medical geneticist with expertise in molecular diagnosis, genetic counselling, ethical issues, innovation and novel techniques, novel therapies based on antisense approach. AF is coordinator of EU funded projects (Finger, BIO-NMD) partner (NMD-CHIP, TREAT-NMD, Neuromics) and received several grants from Telethon and other national and international agencies. AF is principal investigator of clinical trials in muscular dystrophies and member of societies (ESHG, ASHG,WMS) and IRDiRC iniitiative as leader of the biomarker working group. Due to her neurological background AF has expertise on neuromuscular diseases, both for research and diagnostics. The Medical genetics unit , she directs, provides cytogenetic and molecular diagnostics teasing for more than 150 diseases, including all the globin genes, all mutation types. It offers genetic counselling for postnatal and prenatal testing, being reference center in Italy and Hub in the Emilia Romagna Region. The Unit takes charge of more than 4000 testing /year in Italy for many mendelian diseases. Among these, thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies represent the 25% of the diagnosed diseases: in fact the unit represents the reference diagnostic center for North-Eastern part of Italy, and has also many accesses from Southern regions. The unit participates to international (EMQN) and national (ISS) EQA schemes for quality control in genetic testing, for 12 different pathologies. It is also part of the coordination and evaluation team of the ISS task for hemoglobinopathies testing. AF participate to managing activities of the EmiliaRomagna Region and leads the Molecular genetics Group of the Italian Society of Human Genetics (SIGU)
