Bernat is a young boy who suffers from a grave case of the rare hemolytic disease known as Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency. PK Deficiency causes the destruction of red blood cells, which results in chronic anemia.
Bernat was diagnosed with PK Deficency at the age of 6 months and since then he has needed blood transfusions every 2-3 weeks. Due to his illness, his bone marrow makes defective red blood cells that have a shorter life span than normal. This means that little by little, his anemia worsens, and when the level becomes dangerous, a blood transfusion is necessary.
Little Bernat has a wonderful website to inform people about PK Deficiency and to raise global awareness about the little things that people can do to help children like Bernat. Moreover you can visit his blog, facebook page, or twitter to know more about this big hero daily life!
