Professor Joel Corberand, dedicated to vocational education by e-learning in Laboratory Medicine in the Laboratory of Hematology in Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) of Toulouse, passed away last August 14th at the age of 72 years. “He continued to work hard despite the disease. He leaves a great blank in our laboratory and for all the people who met him” says Dr Jean-Baptiste Rieu, his colleague from Laboratory of Hematology, CHU Toulouse.

Joel Corberand obtained his doctorate in Medicine in Toulouse in 1972 and was named Professor in 1992. As Biologist, he assured the duties of head of laboratory of hematology service of the Rangueil hospital from 1992. He was closely connected to the CHU Toulouse well beyond retirement in 2011.

Particularly involved in continuing education, Professor Joel Corberand was the creator of e-MEDICINimage collection and president of the training of Medical Biologists Association, being one of the three founding members of GIPSE (Groupement d’Intérêt Public Santé Education) created in 2014 with the CHU and Institut Claudius Regaud.

It must be mentioned that during the last years he has been deeply involved in the European Network for Rare and Congenital Anaemias (ENERCA) where he participated as outstanding partner and dedicated leader for the Continuing education by e-learning in hematology (e-HEMATimage programme).

From ENERCA we would like to express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. His enthusiasm for haematology laboratory and blood cell morphology will be strongly difficult to overcome and, following his last wish, we will do our best to insure the continuity of e-HEMATimage and to honor his memory and commitment in his entire life, that as he mentioned in his last words to us “a life that seems to be too short especially when filled with passion.”
