Glucose phosphate isomerase
(GPI) is an enzyme of the glycolytic pathway involved in the conversion of glucose-6-phosphate into fructose-6-phosphate. This red cell enzymopathy is an autosomal recessive inherited condition usually resulting in chronic haemolytic anaemia. In very rare cases also neurological disorders and granulocyte dysfunction can occur. In only one case deficiency of glucose phosphate isomerase has been associated with hydrops fetalis and early death.
